Dogs are brave and loyal creatures. They are thoughtful and extremely protective of their packs. Once a dog has established a strong relationship with his or her human, it can be difficult to sever that bond. Furthermore, the breed is an excellent foster parent. We have read stories of dogs adopting baby animals of different species, fostering them until they are old enough to be taken or brought back to wildlife.
Meet Mishka, a Karelian Bear Dog whose job is to scare bears away from approaching human civilization. He is a service dog, specially trained to recondition bears that have become accustomed to human habitats. The reconditioning is done to help in restoring and protecting wildlife and humans. Hence, it is Mishka’s job to scare bears away from people, including the homes and neighborhoods.
The job requires Mishka to be as tough as nails. But despite it all, Mishka is a sweet dog, and it was put to the test when his owner was called to rescue a fawn. The fawn was orphaned, and Mishka immediately took the fawn under his care. Mishka brought the bear anywhere with him. He licks the young animal and never leaves her side. Mishka is treating the orphaned fawn with all gentleness just like any responsible foster parent would.
Watch the video below of Mishka as he is taking care of the orphaned fawn.
Mishka may have to be aggressive to scare bears away from people. But when it comes to taking care of an orphaned baby animal, he was more than efficient in doing the job.
You can see from the video that the fawn also treats Mishka as her mama. Mishka must be one great foster parent to make the fawn feel exactly at home with him. It proves that dogs are indeed fantastic creatures.
