This senior Shar-Pei had been homeless for quite some time and took refuge in a vacant lot in Los Angeles where he was seen and cared for by some of the people working not too far away from the lot. In his advanced age, however, being looked after sporadically was not something that would benefit him in the long run, especially since his health was continuing to deteriorate. Those who had been attending to him and giving him food was aware of this and decided to call the Hope For Paws organization so they could intervene.
The person who had given them the call had seen some of their videos, and he knew that if there was anyone could help the poor thing, it was them. Once the team of rescuers had arrived at the address of the vacant lot, the dog was right there, sitting, despite the burning sun and the hot cement, and he greeted them warmly, possibly hoping they had food with them. Luckily, they always bring a cheeseburger to a rescue operation and offered him pieces of it — which he struggled a bit to eat because of how swollen his face was.
By the time he had started eating, his tail was already wagging, and he looked just about ready to leave. They noticed that he was breathing heavily, and they would learn later on that the reason for this was that he had Pneumonia. He had a microchip, so they immediately called his master to know what was what, and she readily admitted that the dog had lived outside where kids threw fireworks at him, which was most likely why he ran away.
When they told her that the dog should not have been treated the way he was, she simply answered with a disdainful tone that she had no interest in keeping “that old dog” anyway. It was just as well because after receiving medical care, the dog had finally found his new forever home.
They named him Wally.
