Hope for Paws, a rescue group for stray dogs, received a call about a canine who lived on the streets. When the rescuers arrived, they saw the poor-looking Poodle under a car.
The rescuers were told that the dog was afraid of humans and wouldn’t let anyone near him. They approached the dog gently in hopes that they wouldn’t scare him off. The dog ran away immediately when he saw the rescuers.
The dog ran off into a busy highway and went into a fenced area, and the rescuers ran after him. They quickly closed the gate and tried to capture the dog with the restraining equipment they brought.
The dog barked while trying to get free from the rescuers. He was jumping around and biting the restraining equipment holding him by his neck.
They tried to calm the scared dog by gently telling the dog that everything was going to be okay. Being homeless made it hard for the dog to trust the rescuers. They petted the dog until he was calmed down.
To make him feel comfortable, they took off the restraining equipment and replaced it with a leash and collar. They carried the little dog into the car and had him sit on the lap of one of the rescuers.
Benji’s fresh start
When they arrived at the shelter, they shaved off all of his fur because of severe matting. Afterward, volunteers gave him a medicated bath to get rid of his lice.
They named the dog Benji and started to help him come out of his shell. Lisa Chiarelli, from Hope for Paws, volunteered to help Benji with his trauma and sadness.
The first few weeks after Benji was rescued was a hard time for the dog. Other dogs at the shelter like Lola and Frankie, were a massive help in making Benji feel like he belonged.
Benji finally ran and played with his new friends. Everyone at the shelter felt that Benji was ready to find his forever home.
